North Shore overwhelms Falcons in all departments
Football fans must
have been asking themselves after the conclusion of last Friday night's Class
5A, Region 111, Division 1 bi-district playoff game between District 24-5A
champion Clear Lake and District 23-5A champion North Shore this question: "Did
this really happen?"
Exhibiting an almost flawless execution on both sides, the undefeated Mustangs
(11-0) defeated the Falcons at Pasadena Memorial Stadium by a score of 52-0 to
conclude
Clear
Lake's 2003 high school football season. They finish at 9-2 overall with no
district setbacks.
North
Shore
certainly cemented their status as one of the best high school football teams in
the Greater Houston area- if not the entire state.
In 2002, they were rated number one in the state at one point, and defeated last
year's District 24-5A champion Clear Creek by a score of 41-21 at Pasadena
Memorial Stadium.
Although
Clear
Lake orchestrated some effectively diverse and innovative offensive plays at
times that seemed well-executed in theory,
North
Shore always had an answer: a powerful defense that continually exerted its
omnipresence on the field.
The District 24-5A champions, who led the District in total offense this year,
couldn't mount a sustained or successful offensive drive against their foes. And
the Mustang offense was perhaps even better than their tenacious defense.
For starters,
North
Shore senior Bobby Reid is perceived by many experts as being the best high
school quarterback in the nation.
Although he threw only seven times, Reid connected on all seven passes. He threw
for a total of 205 yards and three touchdowns.
The Mustangs scored initially when running back Justin McNeese, who would score
three touchdowns in this one, found the end zone on a 10-yard run with
5:08 left in the first quarter.
It became 14-0 at the conclusion of first quarter action when Reid found tight
end Tyrell Williams, who would also ultimately score three touchdowns, on a 69-
yard pass reception.
After a safety made the score 16-0, North Shore soon struck again when Reid
spotted Williams open on a short four-yard pass with 8:04 left in the first
half.
The successful two- point conversion meant a 24-0 contest, and the Mustangs
increased their lead to 31-0 by halftime as McNeese again scored on a 32- yard
jaunt.
McNeese's final touchdown occurred with
8:15 remaining in
the third quarter. This time, it came via a one- yard run, and North Shore now
held a 38-0 bulge.
Williams later tallied his third touchdown reception---a 55-yarder---with just
over two minutes left in the third quarter.
All scoring then concluded when senior running back Harold Hightower dashed into
the end zone for a 5-yard touchdown with 8:29 left in the matchup.
"Clear
Lake is a good football team," North Shore Head Coach David Aymond said. "They
are the District 24-5A champions, and their coaching staff is a class act."
Falcon quarterback Scott Oswald completed 5 of 14 passes that were good for 44
yards. Chris Sprott hauled in one pass that netted 32 total yards.
Junior fullback Jerome Stinson, meanwhile, carried the pigskin 12 times,
accumulating 46 yards for the Falcons. Clear Lake picked up 63 rushing yards as
a team on 35 carries.
"North
Shore is a great football team," Falcon Head Coach Troy Aduddell said. "They
have a great group of kids, and are playing very well. I hope they get a state
championship. Tonight just wasn't our night. Our offense, defense, and special
teams didn't execute well. We didn't do the things we needed to do in order to
win."
In assessing the 2003 season, which saw the Falcons win their first outright
District 24-5A title under his leadership, the mentor said, "Hats off to all of
the seniors. They showed great leadership this year, and really did a super job.
I know the seniors will be a good example for all of the underclassmen again
next year."
Clear Lake seniors playing in the final football game of their high school
careers include: Chris (Bubby) Hunter, Curtis Foster, Michael Nemer, William
McMullen, Russell Schober, Brandon Smith, Wesley Furgerson, Chris Sprott, Grant
