The 2006 high school football season has
kicked off with 54 teams led by SFA graduates.
Here's a list of some of the coaches with the year they graduated
from SFA and their current teams.
In West Texas, veteran coach Clyde Parham, 1988, leads the
six-man Jayton Jaybirds.
In the private schools sector, Mike Johnson (1969 and '73) leads
the Christian Mustangs. Johnson is a former Nacogdoches Dragon
assistant coach and a three-time 5A state champion coach.
Steven Cerny (1987-88), one of nine Class A coaches from SFA,
coaches at Shiner. A former Lumberjack baseball player, Cerny led
the Commanches to the playoffs in 2003-04, including the state
championship in 2004.
In Class 2A, Curtis Barbay, 1977, will attempt to lead Newton to
its third straight state final appearance.
He is one of nine 2A SFA coaches.
Local 2A coaches are Barry Ford of San Augustine. the former SFA
player was an assistant coach at SA on the 2004 state championship
team.
Former Garrison player Dale Irwin (1991) coaches the Arp Tigers.
His team will be matched up against Tatum, which was 16-0 on its
way to winning the 3A title last season. Tatum is coached by Andy
Evans, whose mother (Mary Ann Hicks Evans) is a Nacogdoches and SFA
graduate. Andy's dad, Joe, is a 1954 graduate who helped coach Tatum
last season.
Larry Prince (1992), another former Garrison player, is the
defensive coordinator at Tatum. He has two state rings, one at
Garrison and Tatum.
Jeff Traylor (1990-92) is one of 17 3A coaches. His Gilmer team
is ranked No. 1 in the state. One of Gilmer's top players is
receiver Curtis Brown, whose parents Billy and Linda are both 1966
SFA graduates.
Ron Callahan (1982-83) is the head coach at Center.
Seven SFA graduates lead 4A teams, including former Garrison
coach Jimmy Thompson (1976), who is the head man at Mount Pleasant.
Lydell Wilson (1992) coaches at Rosenbery-Lamar.
Former NHS coach Bobby Reyes (1973) leads Richardson Pearce.
Bill Harper (1980) is leadsing Nacogdoches, after his team
compiled a 6-4 mark, its best season since 1992, last season.
Seven 5A teams are coached by SFA graduates.
Five of them coach along Interstate 45 – between Houston and
Galveston.
Edward Arledge (1987) leads Clear Brook and
Troy Aduddell will lead
Clear Lake.
Darrell Warden (1987) is in his second year at Clear Creek.
Arledge, Aduddell and Warden are former SFA players.
Greg Carney (1978), a former Garrison player, leads the 3A
Hitckcock Bulldogs. He coached current SFA quarterback Danny
Southall.
Pat Daniels (1993-95) coaches at Galveston O'Connell. He led that
team to the TAPPS softball state title last season.
Four SFA graduates lead college teams.
Jay Brown (1984), a former SFA player from Jacksonville, will
defend the conference championship team at Texas College in Tyler.
Dale Carr (1990), a former SFA assistant coach and former Tyler
JC head coach, is in his second year at Angelo State.
John Meich (1979), a former SFA assistant coach, is starting his
18th year at Division III Wisconsin Steven Point University.
Todd Whitten (1988), a former SFA quarterback, is starting his
second season at Sam Houston.
