The Jersey Village Falcons had football fans
on edge in the fourth quarter of a game won
14-9 by Clear Lake at Pridgeon Stadium last
week.
The Falcons hope to rebound this week when
they battle Memorial at on Sept. 8 at Tully
Stadium.
Jersey Village never led Clear Lake, after
falling behind 7-0 with 1:11 remaining in
the first half, but the opponent was always
mindful of the Falcons experienced passing
game --- especially in the final quarter.
After Clear scored its second touchdown
early in the second half, Jersey Village
started a comeback, taking the ensuing
kickoff at its 31-yard line and marching 69
yards in four plays to make the score 14-7
with 4:35 remaining in the third quarter.
The drive featured a pair of passes from
Garrett Graham to running back Anthony Bibbs
for 35 and 33 yards. Two plays later Bibbs
scored on a one-yard run.
Clear Lake started a new drive on its 18
yard line, but the Jersey Village defense
stiffened and held the opponent to seven
yards on three plays, forcing a punt from
the 25. But Clear Lake's snap to the punter
squirted through the end zone for a safety
to make the score 14-9.
Clear Lake responded with at an 11-play
drive, that took the ball to the Falcons
18-yard line before defensive back Nick
Hightower batted away a pass in the end zone
to save a touchdown, and force a field goal
attempt that missed wide left.
Jersey Village took the ball on its 20-yard
line with 4:52 remaining and looked ready to
move for the winning score.
Graham completed passes to McCreary and
Nicholas Muery for eight and 17 yards
respectively, moving the ball to the 39-yard
line. The Falcons were then the recipients
of a pair of 15-yard gains on two penalties
that were sandwiched around an 18-yard loss
on a quarterback sack. That gave Jersey
Village the ball at the Clear Lake 49-yard
line.
The Falcons moved to the 38 on an 11-yard
pass to McCreary, but then Graham threw to
Desmond Marrs, who was double-teamed all
day, and lost his footing at the 10-yard
line. As a result, the pass was intercepted
at the five and returned to the 10 by Clear
Lake with 2:12 remaining.
Jersey Village hoped to get the ball back
one more time, and the Falcons defense rose
to the occasion by forcing a fourth-down and
two yards to go situation at the 18 with
1:02 remaining. But instead of punting,
Clear Lake came out of a time out and lined
up in running formation, resulting in a
surprised Falcons defense, and a four-yard
gain on a quarterback sneak.
Clear Lake then ran out the clock for the
win.
Graham finished the contest with 11 pass
completions in 24 attempts for155 yards.
McCreary had five catches for 50 yards, and
Bibbs had 3 receptions for 74 yards. Bibbs
was the leading rusher with 27 yards on 11
carries.
From the start, Clear Lake controlled the
tempo of the contest by rushing 55 times for
199 yards, including a one-yard touchdown
run in the first half, and another of the
same distance in with 6:39 remaining in the
third quarter to take a 14-0 lead.
In the first half, Michael Morris recovered
a fumble to stop one Clear Lake drive, but
Jersey Village was forced to punt from the
Clear Lake 44 with 5:10 on the ensuing
possession.
The punt was blocked and Nelson, the punter,
was tackled with ball at the Falcons 25-yard
line, setting up Clear Lake's first score.
Seven plays later, Clear Lake had a 7-0
lead.
