PEARLAND — The wishbone might be an
antiquated offense in some circles, but it was effective enough to drive
Pearland batty in a District 24-5A opener Friday night.
Clear Lake (5-0, 1-0) relentlessly pounded away, at the Oiler defense,
scoring on its first six possessions to take a convincing 40-20 win over
Pearland in a battle of unbeatens at The Rig.
The Oilers (4-1, 0-1) took a 13-7 lead in the second quarter, but Clear Lake
responded with 30 unanswered points in sending Pearland to its first loss in
five games.
“We just couldn’t stop them,” Oilers head coach Tony Heath said. “Those guys
(the Falcons) came ready to play. We were doing a lot of standing around,
and not playing physical on defense.”
As a result, the Falcons hammered the Oiler line 55 times for 365 yards
rushing. Lake only threw the ball twice, and one of those was a 37-yard
completion.
“The kids played great on both sides of the ball,” Clear Lake head coach
Troy Aduddell said. “Drew (Andrew Decker) did a great job of reading the
option all night. We just had a great offensive scheme.”
Five running backs gained at least 58 yards for Clear Lake, led by fullback
Michael Grant’s 99 yards on 16 carries. Decker finished with 77 yards on 21
attempts and scored three times on runs of 2, 2 and 8 yards.
Pearland was led by running back Foswhitt Whittaker, who rushed 21 times for
165 yards and quarterback Sam Proctor, who gained 66 yards on eight carries,
before leaving the game with an injury.
The Oilers lost two fumbles that led to Clear Lake scores, and Pearland was
intercepted once in a game that was delayed 30 minutes by lightning. |
