Can't ask for a better start than 3-0 and
that's where Clear Lake's football team is
at the moment.
And on Friday the Falcons are going to
attempt to make it 4-0 when they host Dobie
(0-2) in District Stadium.
Clear Lake completely dominated South
Houston last week with nearly a 400-yard
offensive show, with 316 of those yards
coming on the ground.
Dobie, on the other hand, lost a
heartbreaker to Clear Brook (1-2) in double
overtime.
"They've got some big kids on the offensive
and defensive lines," said Falcon coach Troy
Aduddell. "We're going to have to execute
better on offense (than we did against South
Houston). We're doing pretty well with our
ball control and we'll have to keep it
going."
Aduddell has the utmost confidence in his
team.
"The kids know what is expected of them," he
said.
The Clear Lake-Dobie kickoff is at 7 p.m.
Against South Houston the Falcons scored on
their opening drive and never looked back.
There were a few hiccups but generally Lake
had its way, building a 38-7 lead heading
into the fourth quarter.
"Overall, we feel real good about our
effort," said Aduddell. "Our offense
struggled at times but our special teams
played well and our defense was solid."
Clear Lake's first drive began at its own
39. Eight plays later Michael Grant went in
from the 13-yard line. Following Dylant
Dement's kick the Falcons led 7-0 with 7:32
left in the period.
Grant was the leading ground workhorse in
the game with 22 carries for 128 yards. He
has 307 yards for the season, third best in
District 24-5A and tops for Lake.
The Falcons could have had another scoring
drive but squandered that chance on a fourth
down play at the Trojan 5-yard line that
took a long time to develop. South Houston's
defense smothered that effort for a loss.
Clear Lake made it 14-0 on a 50-yard drive
with 10:23 left before the half as Richard
Porfirio snared a pass from junior
quarterback Drew Decker.
For a team that wasn't doing much previously
with the pass, the Falcons went to the
airwaves again with 3:31 left in the half as
Decker took advantage of the Trojans
stacking the box and found an open Porfirio
down the middle for a 36-yard strike and a
21-0 lead.
South Houston scored its first touchdown
only 14 seconds from the half after the
Trojans intercepted a pass at their own
39-yard line and returned it to Lake's
8-yard line. From there Jahmai Coleman
easily beat the poor coverage and was
untouched in the end zone as he hauled in
quarterback Keegan Savaell's looping toss to
make it 21-7.
The second half began much like the first,
with Clear Lake scoring a minute and a half
into the frame to make it 28-7. Decker
brought home the score with a 1-yard plunge.
The drive was set up by a Falcon
interception at the Lake 38.
It didn't take long for the Falcons to take
advantage of another miscue by the Trojans.
Lake recovered an errant punt that sailed
over the punter's head at the South Houston
13 but had to settle for a 38-yard Dement
field goal and a 31-7 lead.
The Trojans scored two touchdowns in the
fourth period with a 40-yard scoring run by
Porfirio sandwiched in between.
South Houston fumbled six times, losing
three to the Falcons, plus the Trojans had
another three passes intercepted. Lake lost
both fumbles and had that one interception.
The Falcons are third in offense in the
district, behind Pearland and Brazoswood
with a 327 yard average. Defensively, Lake
is second behind the Bucs, allowing 195
yards per game.
