LEAGUE CITY — Both
teams were fighting for their playoff lives Thursday at District
Stadium, and the Alvin Yellowjackets had just enough to get past
Clear Lake.
Alvin stayed in the hunt for a District 24-5A playoff spot with a
24-20 win. The Yellow-jackets (3-4, 2-1) entered the night tied for
third in the district race.
Lake (2-7, 0-4) was driving for the go-ahead touchdown late, but
quarterback Jonathan Gilmer fumbled at the 13-yard line.
The Falcons opened the game’s scoring on Gilmer’s eight-yard
touchdown run at the 2:47 mark of the first quarter.
Gilmer then found running back Ronnie Feaster on a 42-yard pass, and
the point-after gave Lake a 14-0 lead with 7:30 showing on the
second quarter clock.
Alvin’s William Jones scored on a six-yard run to cut the lead to
14-7 with 2:05 remaining in the first half.
The Yellowjackets then recovered a fumble at the Lake 25-yard line
and turned it into points. The drive that followed ended in a
one-yard touchdown run by Jones, and a successful point-after
attempt tied the score at 14-14 with 29 seconds left in the half.
In the third quarter, Lake’s Gilmer connected with Vincent Brooks on
a 54-yard touchdown pass, but the Falcons missed the extra point.
Alvin regained the lead, 21-20, on a 31-yard touchdown pass from J.B.
Brown to Chris Nowlin and a Jimmy Juarez point-after kick with 3:08
remaining in the third.
Juarez gave Alvin some insurance with a 29-yard field goal with 6:57
left to play in the game.
