For Clear Brook football, its
what might have been. For Clear Lake football, theres
still a chance to get that one district win in the final
game. On Friday the Wolverines spoiled Lakes
homecoming with a 27-14 triumph. That ended Brooks
24-5A record at a disappointing 3-3 and 4-6 overall. The
Wolverines bye week is next week, so they are finished for
the year without making the playoffs. Next week Clear Lake
will try to get on the
W
board for the first time this year in 24-5A when the
Falcons host Ball in District Stadium on Thursday. Lakes
district mark is 0-6 and 2-7 overall. While Clear Brook
was favored to make post-season, it was thought that the
Falcons would have a difficult time after losing 9 and 9
on each side of the ball from last years
state semifinal run. But it wasnt
expected that Lake would be winless in district with one
game remaining. While the homecoming might have been a
distraction to the Falcons before the packed District
Stadium crowd, Lake coach Troy Aduddell surmised the
entire season up to now.
The whole year has been a distraction,
he said. At the
beginning we had no facilities, then came the hurricane
and we played four games in 14 days and then we had two
weeks off. That
plays havoc with running the option. It takes practice and
more practice. The
kids have had to endure a lot of adversity, and I feel a
lot for the seniors,
Aduddell added. Weve
been in every game, but the ball has not bounced our way.
But partial redemption is still possible on Thursday
against incoming Ball.
We knew theyre (Tors)
going to be fired up and play very physical football,
he said. Hopefully
the ball will bounce our way for a change.
With the season over, Clear Brook coach Edward Arledge got
a good look at some of his top players for next season.
The players scoring the touchdowns were all underclassmen.
But Arledge was very pleased with the way the Wolverines
played the final game knowing there was no chance for
making the playoffs.
We talked about it with the realization that we couldnt
make the playoffs, so how were we going to play this last
game, Arledge
said. We had a
choice to make. To play lights out like were
supposed to or lay down.
The kids did a great job in preparing for the option.
Clear Lake produced only 191 yards of offense against the
Wolverines, its lowest output of the year. That included
16 yards passing. Falcon quarterback Jonathan Gilmer was
2-for-11 and was picked off twice. Brook didnt
produce that much more yardage, 226, with 72 of those
yards in the air. But the Wolverines didnt
really have to gain that much yardage as Clear Lakes
Achilles heel, the turnover, surfaced at inopportune
times. All three of Clear Brooks
touchdowns were scored after Clear Lake turnovers. The
Wolverines took a 10-6 lead into the halftime locker rooms
and gradually built that lead, thanks in part to the
Falcon miscues. The 10-6 lead became 17-6 after
quarterback James Holmes hooked up with Chad Bimage for a
23-yard touchdown with 4:24 left in the third period.
Junior Brandon Yelovich, who kicked all three PATs also
nailed two field goals for Brook. Clear Lake managed to
get closer one more time as junior Ronnie Feaster went in
from 29 yards out less than three minutes later. The
Falcons, who missed the first point-after, went for two
and made it to pull within three at 17-14. But Clear Brook
kept Lake off the scoreboard in the fourth period while
tacking on 10 points on Yelovichs
37-yard trey and Torrence Francis
24-yard run with nine minutes left in the fourth. Brook
got on the board first in the opening period on Yelovichs
26-yard field goal five minutes into the game. Clear Lake
then went on a 74-yard march with Feaster going the final
24 on the second play of the second quarter. The run for
two points didnt
quite make it. The teams traded possessions for most of
the rest of the second period. But Clear Lake fumbled on
its 19 with 1:41 left in the half. Three plays later wide
receiver Rod Daniels went on a slant and caught Holmes
pass for a 19-yard touchdown with only 20 seconds left in
the half. Arledge lauded his senior players such as Holmes
and Carlos Frank.
James Holmes came in and did a great job at quarterback.
In the games he threw for more yards than weve
had passing the last two years,
Arledge said. With a stellar lineup returning next year,
Arledge cant wait.
Were going to
start the week building for next year,
he said.
