Clear Lake's coaching staff will have an extra week to find out
what it is that ails Falcon football.
The Falcons have this week off after dropping to 0-4 in District
24-5A in a 24-20 loss to Alvin last week.
While on the surface, what ails Lake football is that 0-4 district
mark to go along with a 2-6 season record.
But there is actually more to it. It's the heart of the team that
head coach Troy Aduddell and his staff are looking at.
It doesn't make sense why Lake's record is such when you look at
the good part of the 24-5A statistics.
For starters, the Falcons are No. 1 in total offense. They average
more than 350 yards per game. In eight games this season, Lake has
produced nearly 2500 yards on the ground, to go along with the 350
yards through the air for more than 2800 total yards.
Clear Lake has four rushers with 400 yards or more this season.
Geno Blow has nearly 900, quarterback Jonathan Gilmer has 533, Joe
Clark has 414 and Ronnie Feaster has 404.
Now that's offensive power.
Okay, now let's look on the bad side of the statistics.
Clear Lake is also No. 1 in fumbles this season. The Falcons have
fumbled the ball 33 times, losing 16 of them. The nearest team in
most fumbles to that is Clear Brook with 19/11.
Last week's Alvin game was a mirror of those statistics.
After the Yellowjackets (3-4, 2-1) scored on a 29-yard field goal
with seven minutes left in the fourth period to go ahead 24-20,
Clear Lake couldn't score and its final possession ended when the
Falcons fumbled and Alvin recovered.
The Falcon's offense is No. 1 while Alvin's is last at No. 7.
However, Lake's defense is No. 5 with a 290-yard per game average.
Alvin's defense stands third with a 244-yard average.
Clear Lake took a 14-0 lead in the second period against Alvin,
but unfortunately it didn't hold up.
Taking advantage of Clear Lake fumbles, the Jackets evened matters
at 14 in a span of less then two minutes as the half ended 14-all.
Clear Lake then went ahead again at 20-14 when Vincent Brooks
hauled in a Gilmer pass good for 54 yards with 8:26 left in the
third quarter. Unfortunately, the extra point kick failed.
The Jackets went ahead for the first time and for good five
minutes later on James Brown's 31-yard toss to Chris Nowlin to
make it 21-20. Then with 6:57 remaining Jimmy Juarez kicked that
29-yard field goal to end the scoring.
Overall, Clear Lake outgained the Jackets in total yards 400 to
263.
Clear Lake's next game will be on Friday, Oct. 28 against Clear
Brook. The game is also Lake's homecoming, rescheduled from its
original Sept. 30 date and postponed due to Hurricane Rita.
Alvin hosts Clear Brook this Friday at 7:30 p.m.
