It was billed as an early season showdown between two District
24-5A high school football contenders, with one team having the
most productive offense in the district, while the other ranked
second overall in team offense and team defense.
The contest turned into a defensive battle, and the outcome wasn't
decided until the final minutes, when number five Houston area-
rated Pearland (5-0, 1-0) engineered a methodical 63-yard drive to
prevail over Clear Lake (2-3, 0-1) by a score of 14-3 last Friday
evening at the Rig.
The Falcons, who are now forced to play three games without much
rest because of the impending threat of Hurricane Rita, challenged
Brazoswood last night at Pearland, and will meet rival Clear Creek
Saturday at 6 p.m. at District Stadium.
Clear Creek is the home team.
Pearland, meanwhile, met Clear Brook last night at District
Stadium, and will host Galveston Ball Saturday in another key
matchup.
"I just told the players to strap it on and get ready to play
football again," Falcon head coach Troy Aduddell said.
Regarding the Wildcats, the head mentor said, "Clear Creek is in a
transitional phase, but they will be a team we have to contend
with. You can throw out the records whenever Clear Lake and Clear
Creek meet because it's always a battle. I know all of the coaches
at Clear Creek, and I know they will have their players ready to
play."
Both defenses rose to the occasion in this one, usually preventing
the opposing team from penetrating the red zone.
The Oilers struck first, however, when District 24-5A rushing
leader Foswhitt Whittaker scampered down the middle of the field
for a 66- yard touchdown with two minutes remaining in the first
quarter of play.
Despite possessing the number one rated offense in District 24-5A
and the number two rated rusher in Geno Blow, the Falcons were not
able to answer until kicker Ken Tabata connected on a 28- yard
field goal with time running out in the first half to cut the
deficit to 7-3.
It would stay this way until 5:49 was left in the contest, when
Pearland quarterback Michael Speciale sneaked into the end zone
via a one-yard plunge to account for the final 14-3 score.
Whittaker led all rushers with 186 yards on 20 carries, with
Speciale churning out 97 yards on 19 carries.
Clear Lake quarterback Jonathan Gilmer paced the Falcons with 59
total rushing yards gained on 15 carries.
Gilmer completed one of six attempted passes, spotting halfback
Joe Clark open for a 27 yard reception.
The Falcon defense, meanwhile, held Pearland to no passing yards
throughout the contest, as Speciale didn't attempt a pass in
relying strictly on the Oiler rushing game.
"We weren't very aggressive on defense in the first half," head
Pearland coach Tony Heath said. "We told the kids to be a little
more aggressive at halftime, and not to wait for something to
happen. The key was being able to make crucial first downs, and
not allowing Clear Lake to score a touchdown. Our defense bent,
but didn't break. And we were able to make some big plays."
Heath added, "Clear Lake played a great game. (Head coach) Troy
Aduddell does a good job with his team. They have a quality
football program."
"We're a young offensive team in size and experience," Aduddell
said. "People didn't think we could play with Pearland. But it was
a tight game up until the end. Defensively, it was a hard fought
game all the way through. Both teams struggled offensively. I
think you saw two good defensive ballclubs tonight that went after
each other. Last year was a completely different football game. We
won 35-28, and the victory gave us the (District 24-5A)
championship."
