Brazoswood downs Clear Lake,
By Chris Greene, The

PEARLAND — Brazoswood made the best of a
situation that was less than ideal Tuesday, defeating District
25-4A opponent Clear Lake, 28-12, after just four days of
practice.
Both Brazoswood (3-3, 1-1) and Clear Lake (2-4, 0-2) last
played Thursday in an effort to make up games missed during
the evacuation from the area for Hurricane Rita.
The teams were supposed to meet Friday at District Stadium in
League City, but had to move the game up to get additional
games in Saturday.
The situation left little time for preparations, but
Brazoswood head coach Dean De Atley said his staff and players
put together a solid game plan and effort in the time they had
to prepare for Clear Lake.
“I didn’t think it would be pretty on a Tuesday night,” De
Atley said. “But I can’t say enough about my coaches and kids.
The coaches got together a game plan in the shortest time that
I have ever been around, and the kids executed it about as
well as you can in about four and a half days. I am just so
proud of Zeke Wintjen, my defensive coordinator, and Ken
Neely, my offensive coordinator, for getting everything
together.”
Brazoswood gave Clear Lake plenty of opportunities to see Josh
Felder come scurrying out of the backfield. The senior running
back had 136 yards on 25 carries and scored twice. He led all
rushers in the game.
Yobes Walker carried the ball nine times for 40 yards and also
had a touchdown run for the Bucs.
Quarterback Matt McClure completed four-of-eight passes for 30
yards, and carried the ball six times for 25 yards and one
touchdown.
Brazoswood rushers were never caught behind the line at
scrimmage in the game, and McClure was never sacked.
Clear Lake was led by the rushing of Geno Blow. The senior
carried 12 times for 75 yards.
Quarterback Jonathan Gilmer completed just three passes, all
in the fourth quarter, on seven attempts for 28 yards.
He was intercepted by Brazoswood’s Chris King on the game’s
final play.
Both teams had just one possession in the first quarter. Clear
Lake started with the ball and drove to the Brazoswood 19
before losing two yards and eight yards on its next two plays.
Clear Lake kicker Ken Tabata then attempted a 45-yard field
goal, but the kick was no good.
Brazoswood responded with an 11-play scoring drive that ended
in a two-yard touchdown run by McClure as time expired in the
first quarter. Mike Terrasa added the point after and the Bucs
took a 7-0 lead.
Clear Lake responded quickly, needing just four plays to find
the end zone. A good kickoff return set the Falcons up at
their own 48, and runs of 19, 23 and two yards put Clear Lake
at the Brazoswood 8. Ronnie Feaster then ran the ball in on
the next play. The point-after attempt was blocked, and the
Bucs held on to a one-point lead.
Brazoswood scored again before the half when Felder ran the
ball in from the 19-yard line on third-and-nine. Terrasa
kicked the PAT, and the Bucs had an eight-point lead at the
half.
The drive was set up after Brazoswood’s Nick Pisarski
recovered a Clear Lake fumble at the Falcons’ 19.
Pisarski’s fumble recovery was the second of the second
quarter by Brazoswood. Stewart Mobley fell on a Falcon fumble
at the Falcons’ 26 earlier in the quarter, and it appeared the
Bucs would turn the turnover into points.
Brazoswood drove to the 2-yard line in five plays, but
couldn’t punch the ball in on the next four and turned the
ball over inside the 1.
Neither team scored in the third quarter, and Brazoswood
jumped out to a 28-6 lead in the fourth with a pair of
four-yard runs for touchdowns — one by Walker, the other by
Felder. Terrasa was successful on both PATs.
Clear Lake scored the game’s final touchdown with just more
than two minutes remaining as Gilmer pushed his way in from
the 1-yard line.
Brazoswood next hosts Clear Brook at 2 p.m. Saturday, while
Clear Lake plays Creek at District Stadium on Saturday.
