The Power Ranking sites--Collier-Sharp, Jerry's
Texas High School Football Ratings and Data Poll--use a system of Ranking the
teams and assigning them a "Power Rating." The numbers they generate depend on
the scores of the game throughout the season, past performance, and mystical factors.
These numbers are generated following each game, and I thought it would be interesting to
track them for each of the teams the Falcons are going to play this year. (You can read
about the process used by Data Poll on
their website--if the information provides you with total enlightenment, please let me
know. Note: the Data Poll managers put up a new explanation over
the weekend of August 18, and it is actually possible to follow the logic of their method
now.)
In the table below, the District Standing (DS)
and Power Ranking (PR) are given first for Data Poll and then for Collier-Sharp (there
wasn't room in the table to name Data Poll, but their number follows the team name). The
Power Ranking (PR) is considerably different for the two services as they use different
formulae. However, the relative ranking is what needs to be looked at. The District
Standings represents where the Power Ranking places the team in relationship to all 226 of
the District 5A Teams.
Data Poll also provides a Point Spread figure.
That number is shown in the Score/PS column. The point spread predicted should change as
the season progresses, and it will be updated as we move through the season.
I don't know how accurate any of this stuff
is, but it does demonstrate that if you take into account last years play and other bits
of data that can be gathered, the Falcons don't have a pushover, wimpy schedule.
They have a demonstrably tough schedule. That's good. It will test the mettle
of the team, and each game will be an opportunity to try out the stuff that's been learned
in the last tough game.
Now, if the Collier-Sharp and Data Poll teams
keep up with their data, we'll be able to watch the Falcons move up on the list as the
season progresses. Or else we will discover that these power rankings are just a dream and
a way for a mathematician to move into the prognosticating business.
In the Chart Below the
DataPoll predicted point spread is given in Red in the second column. DataPoll computes
these scores each week starting with Zero Week. The predicted point spread changes as the
teams win or lose games. Here we have lined up the point spreads with a vertical bar
between them: -3|-1|2|5|. The array at the left would
indicate that in Week 1 the team listed was predicted to beat by 3 points, in week one by
one point, in week two they were predicted to lose to Lake by two points, and in Week
Three they were predicted to lose by five. Collier-Sharp only publishes there point spread
the week of the game, so there is only one value shown. Once a game is played, the final
score is placed in the second column.
