Falcon Defense Shuts Out Brook!
Head for Showdown with Ball

The Falcons met cross town rival Clear Brook on Friday night at District Stadium.  The field conditions had improved a little, but in general the field was still quite soggy and slow.   Brook’s offense was completely stymied by Lake’s defense.  Lake’s defense rung up their first shutout of the season, holding Brook to only 62 yards of  total offense.  On the offensive side, ball movement wasn’t a problem.  Lake played a conservative game given the field conditions, relying more on the run than the pass as in previous weeks.

The stage is now set for next week’s show down with Galveston Ball for the playoffs.  Both Ball and Lake are 2-2 in District 24-5A, with the winner going to the playoffs.

Lake’s defense held Brook completely in check.  Brook was only able to rush 31 times for 28 yards, less than one yard per carry.  Once again Lake’s front four of Dash Dahlke, John Dunaway, Michael Plumlee, and John Kirby conceded nothing. The middle was stuffed tight by Chris Davison and Wes Miller.  The secondary of Will McMullen, Mark Nowinski, Michael Nemer, Patrick Kinslow and Russell Schober were just as stingy allowing only three completions for 34 yards.

Offensively, the Falcons faced a bigger challenge, as Brook’s defense was much stronger than their offense. Brook played Lake’s receivers tight, but Austin Sherrill stepped up becoming Fritz’s primary target, pulling in 3 passes for 60 yards.   Fritz was 9-17 for 94 yards, scoring Lake’s first TD on a short run.  Chris Sprott carried 16 times for 61 yards including a TD.

Tommy Duff was good on both extra points, and was 1 for 2 on field goals.

The first quarter ended at a 0-0 tie. From the start Lake’s defense conceded nothing.

Late in the first quarter, Lake put a good drive together, with strong running by Chris Sprott.  The big play was a 35 yard pass from Fritz to Scott Oswald.  On a fourth and 10, Lake tried a 33-yard field goal into the wind but it was wide of the mark.

On the next possession, Lake’s defensive took care of Brook in short order. On the first play, Dash Dahlke came up with a big stop.  On the very next play Michael Nemer came up with the interception.

Lake wasted no time capitalizing on Nemer’s interception.  Sprott had a big run for 15, followed by runs of 4 and 10.  Fritz added a 15 yard scramble and Lake had a first and goal at the Brook five yard line.  After Sprott took the ball to the one, Fritz took it in for the TD.

On the next series, Lake’s defense held strong with big plays by Dahlke, Kinslow  and Wes Miller.  Creek was forced to punt.

Lake’s offense again wasted no time in moving the ball down the field.  Starting at the Lake 42, Elrick Jones took the ball wide for 17.  Then Fritz hit Sherrill over the middle for 20 yards and the first down.  Facing a fourth and long, Tommy Duff came on for the Field Goal try, which was good, putting Lake ahead 10-0 at the half.

Action in the second half was slowed considerably by the deteriorating field conditions.  Lake managed a second score after a Brook fumble deep in their own territory.  Lake’s offensive wasted no time driving to the goal line, with Sprott taking it in for the score.
