JV Blue Football Team Baytown Lee vs Clear Lake 9.08.05 Clear Lake High School Field write-up courtesy of Tom Worthen The Clear Lake Falcons JV Dark Team hosted the Ganders from Baytown Lee this week at the newly renovated field at Clear Lake High School. The game had a lot of action as the good guys won 41-12. The game began with CL’s Nick Brem taking the opening kick from the 6 yard line up to the CL 36 yard line. Navigating the offense for Clear Lake again was QB Drew Decker. On the first play from scrimmage, Decker pitched out to Richard Porfirio who broke a couple of tackles and gained 6 on the play. The second down play saw Decker keep on the option and pick up 5 more and a first down. The next play was a give to fullback Dalton Wrinkle for a 3 yard gain, followed by a pitch to halfback Spencer Hayes for an additional 2 yards. On third and 5, Decker reading the option to perfection, kept for an 11 yard gain and another first down. Decker had his way with the BT defense as he kept the ball on the option on the three consecutive plays picking up 14, 3, and then 22 on a diving effort to get into the end zone, but was stopped about a foot short. A give to Kyle Power up the middle yielded the games first score. The extra point by Richard Porfirio was good. Porfirio followed by sending the kickoff into the end zone for a touchback. Baytown’s first play from scrimmage was a run over tackle but went no where as Trevor Riser stopped him for a yard loss. An incomplete pass to the left side line with Victor Smith covering, was followed by a second incompletion over the middle. On fourth and 11 from the 19, Cody Worthen got a hand on the Baytown punt attempt giving the ball to CL at the Baytown 34. On 1st down, continuing to exploit the Gander defense, Decker kept on the option for 8 yards. The next play saw Spencer Hayes take a pitch and make a good run until he was hit by a BT linebacker knocking the ball loose and into the end zone where the Ganders fell on it for a touchback. Taking advantage of the break, the Baytown halfback took a draw around the right end 60 yards before Austin Seal caught him to make a touchdown saving tackle at the CL 20. The same play up the middle picked up 4 with Don Campbell making the stop. A hard hit by Riser stopped a counter at the line of scrimmage, followed by an incomplete pass thanks to pressure on the QB by Sam Akinyeye. Going for it on fourth and long, the Gander QB threw a pass into the end zone but Sean Starling was there to break it up. Starting at the BT 19, Decker picked up 1, followed by a couple by Spencer Hayes. On third and long, Porfirio took a pitch from Decker all the way out to the BT 43. Back to back keepers by Decker combined for 8 yards, followed by a give up the middle to Nathan Knight pushing his way for a first down. On first down CL was charged with a procedure penalty, starting them over at the BT 23, first and 15. A fumbled snap lost 1 yard, and a pick up of 3 on a dive by Dalton Wrinkle brought up a third and long. Decker making a good read on the option, pitched out to Porfirio, who took it around the outside and into the end zone for another CL TD. The extra point by Porfirio was good making the score 14-0 CL. Porfirio’s kickoff went into the end zone, but the BT return man decided to bring it out but was hit by Kyle Potts and #51 knocking the ball loose but recovered by BT. A stop by Riser at the line on first down was followed by a hand off out of the shotgun to a receiver coming back across the backfield, was good for 12 yards before being brought down by Worthen, Riser, and Potts. On the first down play, #74 for Clear Lake stopped the Gander back at the line for no gain. On second and ten, a pass over the middle allowed Kyle Potts to unload on the would-be receiver as the ball arrived, separating him from the ball. On third and 10, good coverage by the CL defenders and pressure up front, lead by Sam Akinyeye, saw the BT QB eventually slip down behind the line of scrimmage. On fourth and long, BT was forced to punt, but a bad snap got away from the punter and Worthen was there to down the punter at the BT 2 yard line. On the first play, Decker took the ball in for another CL TD. The extra point was good by Porfirio making it 21-0 in favor of Lake. Porfirio’s kickoff went down to the 5, but a good return brought it out to the 48 where Tyler David and Worthen finally made the stop. On first down a good run up the middle yielded 8 before Nick Brem and Potts brought the BT halfback down. A draw up the middle picked up enough for a first down with #61 making the stop. A first down pass and completion to the left flats, and a cut back against the grain was stopped for no gain by Akinyeye and Worthen. Riser sniffed out a screen pass on second down stopping it for only 2 yards. A third down counter play picked up 7, bringing up fourth and short. Going for it on fourth, Jon Plasek delivered a blow to the receiver of a screen pass, but not before he was able to pick up the short first down yardage. On first down on the CL 15, the Gander QB dropped back to pass and threw to the right side where Cody Worthen stepped in front of the BT receiver and picked off the pass, and with help from some good blocking, took it 95 yards for the fourth CL TD. Porfirio’s fourth extra point try was good making the score 28-0 CL. The ensuing kickoff was down to the 10 yard line and brought out to the 27, with Kyle Power on the stop. The first down play again was stopped by Trevor Riser for only a 2 yard gain. A quick pass to the right flats was stopped for no gain by Austin Seal and Campbell. An incomplete pass set up a punting situation for BT. The punt was downed at the CL 33 yard line. A hand off to the full back resulted in a fumble, but Decker was there for the recovery, still picking up 2 on the play. An offside penalty on BT moved the ball up 5, making it second and 3. On third down Spencer Hayes took a pitch from Decker and worked hard taking it to the 50 yard line and a first down. A give to Kyle Power on first down got 1, followed by another keeper by Decker for 13 and a first. The next play saw Decker keep on the option as he turned the corner, then 8 yards down field he pitch out to his following halfback. Unfortunately the pitch was muffed and the Ganders recovered it on the 20. An incomplete screen pass on first down was followed by a draw up the middle that was good for 11 with Jake Runte, Worthen, and Potts making the stop. The next play was a pass to the right flats where again Runte was there for the tackle. A run around the left side was stopped by Potts, but not before a BT first down. Potts broke up a first down pass attempt. On second down, a pass to the left side was stopped by Nick Brem after a 5 yard gain. Then the stick of the game came as Jon Plasek shot through the line hitting the BT halfback head on with a perfectly executed form tackle. Going for it on fourth down, a pass down field fell incomplete. Decker carried the ball for 3 yards as the first half ended. Score CL-28 BT-0. Second Half CL kicked off to start the second half with Porfirio kicking the ball to the 5 yard line with a Gander return of 25 yards to the 30 where Nick Brem made the stop. On first down a scramble by the QB from the shotgun formation gained 2 with Brem again making the hit. A draw on second down was met by Riser and Campbell for no gain. A quick lateral pass to the left side went for only 2 yards as Riser made the initial hit, with a follow up by #61. BT elected to punt on fourth and six and their punt was downed at the CL 30 yard line. CL’s first offensive series of the second half saw Decker keep on the option six plays in a row, for a cumulative 54 yards, taking his offense down to the 17 yard line. Probably winded, Decker handed to fullback Nathan Knight on the next play for a yard gain. A fumble on the next play was recovered by CL but not before loosing 2 yards. On fourth and six, Dalton Wrinkle drove through the middle of the BT defensive front for six yards and another CL first down. Four more keepers by CL’s work horse Drew Decker chalked 6 more yards and another CL TD. With the extra point by Porfirio wide to the right, CL now leads 34-0. The ensuing kickoff went to the 10 and returned to the 40 where Worthen and Brem made the stop. BT was unsuccessful on three straight running plays, and then going for it on fourth and 10, and having a pass fall incomplete, turned the ball over on downs to CL. A first down give to Wrinkle up the middle yielded 8, followed by a hard earned one yard gain by Knight, set up a perfectly executed play action pass from Decker to Richard Porfirio down the right sideline for a 30 yard TD pass. With the extra point good by Porfirio, the score stood at 41-0. Porfirio, whose leg had to be tiring from all the extra points and kickoffs, found enough energy to send the kickoff into the end zone where it was downed for a touchback. It was looking as if BT was falling apart when a lateral pass was missed and fallen on at the 4, then a screen pass was stifled by Riser and #41 for another yard loss. But the Ganders caught a couple of the CL defenders by surprise with a long pass completion down the right side for a 98 yard touchdown (I still can’t get Cody to tell me whether or not that was his man or not??? That must mean it was L?) The extra point was good…score now 41-7 Unfortunately my camera ran into technical difficulties (dead battery), so I was unable to film the remainder of the game. The game from this point was somewhat uneventful other than a pass interception by Don Campbell and a final trash touchdown by BT. A new battery for my camera has been purchased, so I should capture the entire Katy Taylor game…Sorry to those who made big plays towards the end of the game that I was unable to mention. FINAL SCORE LAKE 41 LEE 14
