Score By Quarter:
In its inaugural game of the season, the CLHS Freshman Dark team sparred evenly with the visiting Cougars of Tomball from start to finish with the deciding factor being two early turnovers. Capitalizing on two first half turnovers, the Cougars put up 13 early points which the Falcons couldn’t overcome. After starting the game with 2 rushing plays gaining 27 yards, the Falcons coughed up the ball and the fumble was returned 47 yards for a touchdown giving the Cougars an early 6-0 lead. Lake then ground out a 60-yard touchdown drive of its own, capped by a 30-yard TD run by Jarred Mack. Kyle Ashton’s extra point kick gave the Falcons the early advantage 7-6. Tomball came back mounting a 60-yard drive of its own, but the drive stalled out at the Falcon 3-yard line. Two plays later, however, the Falcons coughed the ball up again; this time setting the Cougars offense up at the Lake 6 yard line. Tomball took advantage of the field position and powered its way into the end zone for a 13-7 advantage. Neither team was able to put points on the board for the remainder of the half, however the Cougars marched 48 yards to the Lake 9 yard line to set up a field goal attempt on its first possession of the second half. The 25-yard attempt was good, giving the Cougars a 16-7 lead early in the third quarter. The Falcons’ went “3 and out” on their next drive setting up the Tomball Cougars at their own 28-yard line following a fine Ashton punt. The Cougars went 72 yards in 8 plays for a touchdown with a 40-yard pass completion to the Falcon 1-yard line on a 3rd and 7 being the big play to put the game on ice, giving the Cougars a 22-7 lead. Lake mounted a fierce offensive attack on its final possession to drive the ball 75 yards in 11 plays for a touchdown that brought Lake to within 9 points with about a minute remaining. Lake’s attempt to convert a 2-point PAT was thwarted and the game ended with the Cougar QB taking a knee after the Cougars successfully covered Lake’s on-side kickoff attempt. Lake amassed 213 yards on 32 rushing attempts, compared with 221 total yards on 37 plays from scrimmage for the visiting Cougars. RB/QB Eric Canas led the attack with 73 yards on 9 carries, with Mack (50 yds on 4 carries) and QB Cody Remmick (59 yds on 9 carries) running very effectively. The Lake defense was led by LB’s Tyler Sharp (16 tackles) and Ryan Miller (7 tackles). S Cody Baker and DL Blake Brown each recorded 6 tackles to further pace the Lake defense. |
