KANSAS' RECRUITING CLASSHigh school Tang Bacheyie, S, 6-1, 195, Windsor, Ontario (Sandwich) --Originally signed with KU's 2003 recruiting class. Sustained an injury and had a "small academic problem" at the time, according to KU coach Mark Mangino. Has been rehabbing and working on his academics ever since. Enrolled at semester and will participate in spring practices. Josh Bell, TE, 6-7, 250, Hitchcock, Texas -- First-team district as an offensive tackle last season. Played TE as junior before moved to tackle . Also all-district in basketball. Caleb Blakesley, DL, 6-5, 270, Ottawa -- Missed most of senior season. Tore cartilage in his right knee during a victory over KC Turner on Sept. 10 and underwent surgery the next week. All-league as sophomore and junior. As a junior, he won the Class 5A state shot put and was sixth in discus. Russell Brorsen, DL, 6-4, 235, Stillwater, Okla. --First team all-state, co-defensive player of year for district. Had 34 sacks in career. James Holt, DB, 6-3, 200, Altus, Okla. --All-Area as junior and senior. Also lettered in basketball. Bobby Johnson, DL, 6-3, 270, Kansas City (Mo.) Westport -- Helped team to four district and league titles. An uncle, Clay Johnson, played in the NBA. Kerry Meier, QB, 6-3, 208, Pittsburg -- Second-team All-State as QB and All-Class 5A as a kicker. Youngest of four football-playing brothers: Dylan, who will be a fourth-year junior QB at Kansas State; Shad, ex-KSU tight end now with the Tennessee Titans; and Adam, a former Pitt State safety. As a senior, Kerry completed 72 of 151 passes for 924 yards and nine TDs while running 139 times for 924 yards and another nine TDs. Also averaged 40.3 yards as a punter and did kicks limited by turf toe. As a junior, he accounted for 26 TDs while passing for 989 yards and running for 535. Also recruited by KSU and Texas A&M. Raimond Pendleton, WR, 5-10, 180, Garland, Texas -- Named MVP of a Texas all-star game as senior. Top game was 14 catches for 190 yards and two TDs. His father, Michael, played cornerback at Indiana and for the Miami Dolphins. Angus Quigley, RB, 6-2, 210, Cleburne, Texas -- Top game was running for 234 yards and four touchdowns. Second-team all-district. Jose Rodriguez, OL, 6-6, 255, La Puente, Calif. --Younger brother of current KU offensive tackle Cesar Rodriguez. First-team All-San Gabriel Valley. Jake Schermer, LB-S, 6-2, 200, Nixa, Mo. (Ozark) --Set school record for tackles. Team won league titles the past two seasons. Darrell Stuckey, DB, 6-1, 183, Kansas City Washington -- As senior, he had eight interceptions and returned two for touchdowns. Also played running back, rushing for 1,234 yards and catching passes for another 432. Standout in baseball, hitting .604 with six homers as a junior. Justin Thornton, DB, 6-1, 185, St. Joseph (Mo.) Central -- Had four interceptions as senior and returned three for TDs. Also played wide receiver, catching 46 passes for 894 yards and 15 touchdowns as senior. Jonathan Throneberry, DT, 6-3, 300, Lone Grove, Okla. --Was recruited by OU, but Sooners wanted him to go to Northeastern A&M first. As senior, had 80 tackles and five sacks. Took fifth as a heavyweight at the state's 2004 powerlifting championships. Darius Warner, DE, 6-3, 245, Grapevine, Texas -- Played in the state's 2004 all-star game. All-district in 2003. Adam Welty, OL, 6-6, 280, Newton -- All-Metro and All-Class 5A as senior. Started last two seasons at right tackle. Played almost entirely offense. Jeff Wheeler, DE, 6-7, 245, Houston (Clear Lake) --Second team All-Class 5A. First team all-district. Team reached state semifinals last season. Won district in shot put and discus as junior. Arist Wright, LB, 6-0, 205, Houston (Alief/Taylor) --Top game was 259 offensive yards, including 124 rushing. Received late offer from KU after other commitments bailed out. Only other schools looking at him were Louisiana Tech, Houston and Sam Houston State. Also played QB in high school but is being looked at as an OLB. Junior college Rodney Allen, DL, 6-3, 275, Miami, Fla. (Garden City) --First-team All-Jayhawk Conference. Last season had 62 tackles, including 11 for losses. Also had 10 sacks. Marcus Anderson, OL, 6-3, 285, Hayward, Calif. (San Francisco CC) --Started every game at left tackle. Team finished 11-1. Comes from same school that produced current KU quarterback Jason Swanson. Paul Como, DL, 6-2, 248, Murrieta Valley, Calif. (Saddleback CC) --Second-team all-conference for team that won its league. Jake Cox, OL, 6-5, 295, Marengo, Iowa (Iowa Central) --Went to same juco as ex-KU linebacker Gabe Toomey. Named juco All-American as sophomore. Team won league titles in both years there. Brian Murph, WR, 6-1, 185, Marston, Mo. (Butler) --Caught 29 passes for 782 yards and seven TDs as sophomore. Returned punts, averaging 11.9 yards. Signed with Arkansas out of high school but had to go juco because of academics. Redshirted at Butler in 2002. Signed with Division I-AA Southern Illinois after freshman season, then decided last summer wanted to try for I-A scholarship and returned to Butler. Eric Washington, OLB, 6-2, 220, Detroit (Minnesota West) -- From same juco that produced current KU defensive end Charlton Keith. Like Keith, Washington began his career at Minnesota, where he redshirted in 2002. Second team All-American for Division II juco. Last season had 10 sacks, 54 solo tackles and two blocked kicked. Had 107 solo tackles and 15 ½ sacks for career. Wayne Wilder, DT, 6-3, 295, Forsyth, Ga. (Garden City) --All-Jayhawk Conference. Had eight tackles for losses last season. Spent two years at Georgia Military College, including redshirt season. All juco transfers except Allen signed in December and will participate in spring practices. |
