Quarterback Scott Oswald rushed for two touchdowns, and Clear Lake held off a late rally to defeat the Katy Taylor Mustangs 24-17 in a non-district game between two area top-20 teams.
Oswald opened the scoring for the ninth-ranked Falcons with a one-yard run that capped a four-play, 30-yard drive in the first quarter. He later scored on a 15-yard run that finished off another four-play drive to enable the Falcons to take a 21-3 halftime lead. Sandwiched between Oswald's scores was a seven-yard TD run by Geno Blow.
But with Clear Lake on top with a seemingly comfortable 24 -3 lead late in the game, Pierce Daigle hooked up with Justin Richards twice in the span of just over one minute to bring the No. 19 Mustangs to within seven points.
Daigle hooked up Richards on a 73-yard pass with 2:37 left and capped a quick eight-play, 34-yard drive with a 12-yard strike with 1:18 to play. Time ran out before the Mustangs had a chance to send the game into overtime.
Both Oswald, with 122 yards, and Daigle, with 46 yards, led their teams in rushing.
