Big tests coming for both teams

Intra-CCISD football battle #2 hits District Stadium Friday when high-flying Clear Creek (3-0, 5-0) takes on Clear Brook (0-3, 0-6). Kick-off is 7 p.m.

Clear Lake (1-2, 2-4) will play its second consecutive Saturday day game in District Stadium when the Falcons host Brazoswood (0-3, 3-3). Game time is 2 p.m.The Falcons pulled out all the stops and gave undefeated Pearland (3-0, 6-0) all it could handle before falling 28-14.

Clear Brook, meanwhile, played Galveston Ball (2-1, 4-2) evenly in the first and fourth quarters, but the second and third periods didn't go so well. Galveston won 42-13.

Lake's defense allowed three or four big plays which proved to be the difference in the game against Pearland, plus an untimely fumble cost the Falcons momentum.

The first big Oiler play came early as Jeremy Brown evaded everyone on a 67-yard touchdown run in the first period. That was followed, later, by extra-yard pass receptions by the Oilers.

The Falcons weren't deterred by the 67-yard touchdown and ensuing 7-0 Pearland lead. They took a deliberate drive back at the Oilers.

It took Clear Lake over eight minutes to tie the game, but tie it they did. The Falcons traveled 67 yards in 16 plays, with Stephen Scott going the final six yards.

But five minutes later, with 3:12 showing on the clock in the second period, Oiler quarterback connected with Zach Golden for a 50-yard touchdown strike that put Pearland up for good.

Clear Lake fumbled on its next possession, unfortunately, and Pearland recovered the ball on the Falcon 29. It took the Oilers five carries into the line, ending with Brandon Roberson's five-yard punch only 20 seconds from the end of the first half, to put them ahead 21-7.

The Falcons made a fight of it in the second half, even coming up with a fake punt formation to obtain a first down, which ultimately led to Lake's final touchdown.

Lined up in punt formation, the Falcons caught Pearland by surprise by switching into a shotgun offense. Before the Oilers could react, Lake punter Chad Everett nailed Marshall Priest with a 16-yard completion and the Falcons were back in business. That led to another big pass reception, this time a 32-yarder that put the ball at the Oiler two. Howard punched it in from the one two players later.

That made it 21-14 with three minutes left in the third period and it looked like the Falcons were back in business.
But, thanks in part to a 44-yard reception from Allen to Golden to the Lake two, the Oilers stretched it to two touchdowns with 9:21 left in the fourth.

Clear Lake's chance to draw nearer died in the air when Howard was picked off by Brandon Farrar.

While it didn't show on the scoreboard, the Falcons had 228 yards worth of offense, with 117 coming on the ground. Scott led the way for Lake with 60 yards on 17 carries. Howard was 9-18-1 for 85 yards.

Brown's 67-yard scoring run was his big hurrah of the game. He gained 50 more yards for a total of 117 on only 12 rushes. As a team, the Oilers had 145 yards on the ground. Allen passed for (5-11-0) 138 yards. Golden caught three of those for 106 yards.

Clear Brook scored the first touchdown of the game and the last touchdown of the game. Unfortunately, those were the only two scores for the Wolverines. In between, Galveston ran into the end zone six times.

All the game's scoring was confined to the middle two periods.

Wolverine Brandon Wiechmann (8 rushes, 98 yards) scored the first one on a three-yard run in the second quarter. Wiechmann then put the cap on the scoring with a nice 57-yard jaunt only 25 seconds from the end that made the score 42-13. Brook's kick attempt on the first touchdown failed.

With Brook ahead 6-0, Galveston came up with big plays to begin its dominance.

Only 1:10 after the Wolverine score, Terrance Fisher scooted 66 yards to put the Tors ahead for good, 7-6. With 5:30 left in the half Kenneth Caldwell went 52 yards for Galveston to make it 14-6. Then with 49 ticks left in the half, quarterback Roshawn Pope connected with Chad Davis for a 13-yard touchdown pass to make it 21-6.

In the second half it was more of the same, as Brook kept stopping itself with five fumbles (although it lost only one) and eight penalties (in the game). Galveston capitalized to score three more times in the third quarter on runs of 20, 49 and 4. Different players scored all six Tor touchdowns.

Clear Brook had 220 yards of offense (166 on the ground). Galveston had 376 yards total, with 328 of those rushing. The Tors had four players with 70 or more yards rushing.

Wiechmann was Brook's all-offense player. In addition to his game-high 98 yards on the ground, he had all 64 air yards through three receptions.
