Freshman Falcons meet the Pearland Oilers in Mud Bowl 2001
by Raymond Aronoff

As the seasons begin to change that means four letters to Houston, and those are not F-A-L-L. For Houston, the change in season can only mean one thing, R-A-I-N.

Rain it did Thursday night as the Freshman Falcons took on the other undefeated team in the district, the Pearland Oilers. Although fans were huddling under umbrellas, jackets or each other, the Falcons didn't even seem to be thinking about it.

While the Freshman "B" team continued it's steady dominance of the Oilers; characters on the A team like Ryan "Moose" Johnson heckled fellow team-mates and fans alike. The Freshman were having fun and ready to play some ball.

As the rain continued to come down, the anticipation to get out there was heightened. The Falcons could only hope that the rain didn't bring the lightning which cut an earlier seasons game short. The Freshman took the field by blasting through a spirit sign held by fellow Freshman and that would not be the last blasting this team did tonight.

On the opening Oiler drive, they were able to move the ball; but they were taking a punishment in doing so. Big hitting by Jamie McMurchy set the tone for the Clear Lake defense this night and the Oilers knew they were going to pay for each yard earned. Although the Oilers were able to move down to the Falcon 25, there would be no entrance into the end-zone.

As the Falcons took control on offense, it was a replica of what we have seen from this team thus far. Solid running from the tailback, Devin Williams and hard fought yards from the Fullback, Jamie McMurchy. Jamie is slowly emerging as the Mike Alstott of the Falcon team in the backfield, while Devin high stepping fast footwork makes you wonder if Robert Smith really retired.

It was obvious that the spirits were high as the line, lead this evening by Ben Volk and Gabe Guzman and Josh Hayes were opening up holes for the running game and later will prove to do some great pass protection as well.

Although the Oilers moved the ball at times through the first half, they could not sustain the drives. Several Oiler turnovers from interceptions and fumbles cost the Oilers the ball and their momentum. Credit must begiven to a solid falcon linebackers and secondary with great plays by Elrick Jones, Ryan Nisbet and Daniel McCalib.

In the second half of the game, the coaches decided to show the Oilers a balanced attack by letting Quarterback T.J. Jordan throw the rock a few times.

Although T.J.'s first pass of the second half went for an incomplete as it fell through the hands of his wide-out on a post pattern that hit with pinpoint accuracy. It was nice to see that the Q.B. could throw this wet ball could be thrown through the air tonight like a hot knife through butter.

It was in and out by the Oilers as Jamie McMurchy had a fumble recovery and it was back to the Falcons for some more offense. T.J. found his redemption later that half by hitting Scott Oswald on an out in front of the opponents bench that he took 50 additional yards, with Oilers on his tail, into the endzone.

Last years Pony League President Paul Stocks was out to see many of his kids from last years baseball team, play against the Oilers said "I didn't know Scott could run that fast". Another fan just looked over and said, "Only when chased".

The Falcons ended the game 25-0 with a touchdown by Chase Mueller and continue their strong showing in the district.
