Falcons
at La Porte The Clear Lake Falcons traveled to La Porte last Friday to close out the 2001 campaign. The Falcons played hard, but couldnt stop the big plays by the La Porte offense. La Porte took the opening kickoff and drove for an early score to go on top 0-6, after missing the PAT. The defense played hard, but gave up too much yardage on each down. With Azzie Beagnyam missing from the lineup for the first time this year, new names started to emerge to support the defensive leaders. Billy Gutheinz came up with the stop time and again during the first drive and throughout the night. Perkins, Dunaway and Nowinski also made stops. The Lake offensive came out charging hard after the ensuing kickoff. Chris Sprott was carrying the load for the Falcons. Sprott had nice runs of 10 and 13 yards, but Lake had to turn the ball over on downs. Early in the second quarter, the hard charging Falcon defense forced a bad snap by La Porte in the shotgun, and La Porte was forced to punt for the second time in a row. Lake took the ball and Howard and Sprott took turns grinding out 10+yard runs. After four successive first downs, Lake was on a roll. In the red zone, a clipping penalty set Lake back 15. Lake settled for a 40 yard Geoff Cole field goal to make the score 3-6. After being forced to punt in two successive series, the La Porte offense came out more fired up. The defensive charge was led by Patrick Kinslow, Craig Brooks, Mark Nowinski and Billy Gutheinz, but La Porte was able to take it in for the score. La Porte took a 3-12 lead into the locker room at half time. Lake was behind but still in striking distance. During the third quarter, La Porte added two more scores, extending their lead to 3-27. In the fourth quarter, the seniors took the field for both teams. Lake went to their bag of tricks and came up with a 30 yard completion on the reverse pass from Howard to Cormier. Matt Groves taking over at full back pounded the ball in for the score with a strong 15 yard TD run. Lake had closed the gap to 9-27. The defense then did their part holding La Porte to 4 and out, with big stops again by Gutheinz and Dunaway. On the next series, Matt Groves carried the load for the senior offensive squad. Groves and Howard carried the load, with Groves taking it in for the final score from 15 yards out. The Clear Lake Falcons QB Club would like to thank the coaches and trainers for supporting the team all season long. Your efforts are greatly appreciated by the players and parents. NOW, LETS GET READY FOR 2002!!
