Freshmen Grind Down Creek
31-6

The breeze was coming in and the humid Texas Gulf Coast air made the temperature seem a little lower than it really was.  It was just cool enough to keep from getting overheated, but not so cold that play would be affected.  The weather was there, but were the Freshmen Falcons going to be? If there is one thing that you can predict about the Freshmen Falcons, it is that you can't predict the way the team is going to do by the first couple of drives.

The Wildcats took the opening kickoff and marched down the field on the Falcon defense. The defense seemed not  to know whether they were covering the run or the pass. Fans were having serious concerns on whether the team would bounce back from last week's loss to Galveston, their first of the season. The Wildcats scored on their first possession to lead 6 -  0.

The Falcon offense took the field with the hopes of reestablishing its running game from the last two quarters at Galveston. The chemistry was there with tailback Ryan Nisbett and fullback Jamie McMurchy.

After two great runs by Ryan to the left side, the ball was given to Jamie McMurchy (wearing #47 this week) and off he went. By the time the Wildcats realized who had the ball, Jamie had built up enough steam and speed that nobody was going to get between him and those first six Falcon points. With a sure extra point by Kyle Chism, the Falcons took the lead 7-6.

Whether it was by their own motivation, comments by the coaches, or Adam Wolfe watching from the stands, the Falcon defense came to play on Creek's next drive.

Deep in the Wildcat backfield, the defense created a turnover to bring the Falcon offense back on the field. The offense, however, was unable to move the chains, and turned the ball over on downs.  Again, Creek was able to move the ball, but the Falcons held at midfield. The Falcon offense took the field with Elrick Jones in the backfield who started the  drive with a solid run.

On the following play, T.J. Jordan faked the hand off to his tailback, and took the ball into the right side of the end zone by himself, thanks to a great lead block by Dan Green.

Having had the run shut down by the Falcon defense in the previous two drives, the Wildcats tried the air attack.

Much to their dismay, they underestimated both the capabilities of the defensive backs, and the defensive line's relentless pressure on their quarterback. The first play of the drive had the Wildcat QB running for his life from Kevin Kuhl. Elrick Jones led the formidable defense with some big hits.

The Wildcats were forced to turn the ball over again, and the Falcons offense was ready to get back to work. After a great punt return by Elrick, it appeared that the coaches were ready to let T.J. Jordan put some air under the ball. When T.J. saw the Wildcats move into a deep cover defense though he took off to the right and headed toward the middle of the field. The linebacker was waiting for him, foaming at the thought of laying him out.

However, T.J. left only cleat marks in the grass where he did his Salsa-like spin to run the ball for another 15 yards. On the next play, T.J. again ran the ball between the defenders and dove across the goal line.

On the next drive, Creek again moved the ball, but with no significant progress. The pursuit of Ryan Johnson kept the Wildcats running, but running scared. The next Falcon drive was a great show of their ability to control the pace and progress of the game.

The ball was handed off to Elrick Jones and Jamie McMurchy. Elrick was running with his open style, while Jamie was lowering that dome and moving through the Wildcat defense like a locomotive. Jamie finally pounded the ball into the endzone to give the Falcons their halftime lead, 28 - 6.

Half time was a fun break for the Freshman light team, the fans and the parents. The Falcons were back to their strong ways, and the stands were packed. To add to the festive atmosphere was the excitement over Adam coming to both the Freshmen Light and Dark games, only twenty four hours after his release from the hospital. Both freshmen teams dedicated their games to Adam, and it was a good sign that everyone's spirits were high.

On the first drive of the second half, the ball was snapped   over T.J. Jordan's head, but he never even saw it. Ryan Nisbett ran back to field the ball, and then completed a pass to Jeff Giesinger back to the line of scrimmage, saving the Falcons from a 20 yard loss.

At that point, it just seemed like things were going to continue to fall the Falcons' way.  With some more running by quarterback T.J. Jordan, the Wildcat defense was sneaking and creeping toward the line.

That opened up the pass to Cody Bartro on a roll out to the Wildcat seven yard line. Lake was unable to get the six points, but they were able to show some other talents on this team.  Kyle Chism scored the last points of the game with a 30 yard field goal.

After the game, the students convened on the track to congratulate their teammates and heckle their friends and former teammates that now go to Clear Creek.

The Freshmen Falcons were happy to know that they could bounce back and that their friends and teammates were ready to step up and take it upon themselves to fill the gaps that have been left open in the past few weeks. The Freshmen Falcons now have one more season game to determine their place in the district.
