Clear Lake will try
to get into the District 24-5A win column on Friday when the Falcons take on Clear Brook
at District Stadium.
It's the
Wolverines' home game. Kick-off is 7 p.m.
Despite a packed
Clear Lake side of District Stadium, the Falcons disappointed their homecoming crowd on
Friday by falling to Alvin 28-14 in the 24-5A opener.
Clear Lake (0-1,
1-3) had no problem taking the high ground by amassing 302 rushing yards but hut
themselves with some defensive secondary miscues and turnovers.
But it was in the
air where the Falcons fell.
"When you lose
nine defensive starters (from last year) you're going to go through some growing
pains," said Lake head coach Troy Aduddell.
"We've got
three sophomores (in the secondary) and we knew that defense was going to be our
weakness."
Alvin (1-0, 4-0) quarterback Josh Kohler completed only five of eight passes, but those
that he did complete clipped the Falcon wings.
For the second
straight week Clear Lake failed to handle an aerial assault. Last week Baytown Lee went
through the air to defeat the Falcons 28-7.
The coaching staff
is still looking for some performers.
"We have to
find the kids that need to be out there, but when you look that we're four games into the
season there is not a lot of room left," Aduddell said.
Clear Lake scored
first, marching 85 yards, with Steven Scott going the final three for the score, to take a
7-0 lead.
Lake stopped the
Jackets on their ensuring series but coughed up the ball.
Kohler then hit a
streaking Fred Bailey, who went untouched through Lake's secondary and opened up for a
58-yard pass play to tie the game.
Alvin went into the
lead for the first time and for good less than two minutes from the half when Kohler threw
to Zach Muzzy for a 24-yard score.
In the second half
Kohler extended that to 21-7 when he found Bobby Vincent for a 21-yard completion good for
the touchdown.
Clear Lake narrowed
that to 21-14 on quarterback Brian Howard's five-yard keeper with 1:30 left in the third
period. But the Jackets regained their 14-point bulge when Michael White ran in from the
seven as time expired in the third period.
There was no scoring
in the fourth.
Howard had a
whopping 168 yards on 28 rushes in the game, compared to Alvin's 139. Howard also
completed 8 of 22 passes for 101 yards, giving the Falcons over 400 yards of total
offense.
But the offensive
and defensive miscues nullified their other efforts.
Alvin had 267 yards
total offense but had only one turnover, a pass interception.
Clear Lake will go
against a Clear Brook (0-1, 0-4) team that has been outscored 103-12 in the last two
games.
Pearland got out of
the gate quickly and stayed in front for an easy 45-12 win over the Wolverines last week.
"We're both
struggling," Aduddell said of the Lake-Brook matchup.
"I look for it
to be a dog fight because we're both in (CCISD) and nobody wants to lose to the
other,"
In other District
24-5A games last week Clear Creek (1-0, 3-0) ripped Brazoswood 42-10 and Galveston Ball
(1-0, 4-0) clipped La Porte 35-28.
