Fritz Returns to Play

On Saturday, the Falcons took on Brazoswood in District Stadium.  The Falcon offense moved the ball up and down the field all afternoon.  Stephen Scott rushed 25 times for 125 yards.

brazosfritz8_small.jpg (6526 bytes)Michael Fritz returned to action completing 15 of 30 passes for 175 yards, and Warren Cormier pulled in 5 of those passes for 97.

Brain Howard switched to receiver and pulled in several passes including a 32 yard TD reception from Fritz.

The offensive line of Brown, Niemczak, Taylor, Hewer, and Senviel gave Fritz ample time to throw all afternoon, and opened the holes for Scott.

The defense had another strong showing holding Brazoswood to only 10 points.

The big playmakers of Beagyman, Davidson, Perkins, Brooks, McMullen, Priest and Kinslowbrazos10_small.jpg (5838 bytes) led a swarming Falcons defense throughout the game. With a story line like this, it would be realistic to expect that we won, but we didn’t.  The Falcon’s came up short 10-6.

During the opening drive, the Falcon’s offense drove the length of the field. Scott carried the load on the ground. Fritz had key completions to Scott, Cormier and Howard.  But, the drive stalled when the ball was fumbled out of the end zone from the Brazoswood 5-yard line.

The first quarter ended at 0-0. Early in the second quarter, Brazoswood was able to drive into Falcon territory, but was held to 3 points on the field goal.

Lake wasted no time responding, driving the distance and taking it in for the score on a Fritz to Howard 32-yard TD pass. The PAT was off, leaving the score at 6-3.

brazos24_small.jpg (6854 bytes)Late in the second quarter, Lake was on a roll again, driving to the Brazoswood 10.  Scott took the ball on a sweep and into the end zone, but the score was nullified by a holding penalty.   Lake tried for the file goal, but the football hit the cross bar and took a bad bounce.

Early in the third quarter, Brazoswood was able to get a drive going from about mid-field.   For the first time all afternoon, Brazoswood was able to sustain the drive, take the ball in for a score, allowing them to regain the lead at 10-6.

With ample time remaining, Lake took over on offense, and began to drive the length of the field for what should have been the winning score.

The drive began with Scott grinding it out on the ground with runs of 10 and 15 yards.  Fritz hit Cormier for 15 more.  With a 4th and long, Fritz took aim at Howard over the middle, but Howard was tackled before the ball arrived, giving Lake 10 yards on the holding call and another try for the 1st.

Scott scampered to the left for 7 and the first. With 6:30 remaining in the game, Lake had a first and goal on the Brazoswood 5-yard line.  As Lake began to pound the ball into the end zone, the unthinkable happened, a fumble, which was recovered by Brazoswood.

Lake got the ball one more time, but despite a valiant effort there would be no come from behind miracles today.  The hunt was good, but the trophy got away!!
