Clear Lake can't hold Galveston's speed By: Pat Turner, Special to the Citizen November 02, 2001 Falcons give it a go before falling 37-13 GALVESTON: Clear Lake discovered that inexperience and turnovers can be a bad combination when going against an opponent with speed. Ball High School provided the lesson by totaling 420 yards on the ground en route to a 37-13 District 24-5A victory over the Falcons at Courville Stadium Friday night. While the Tors (6-2, 3-2) remained in the heat of the playoff race, the Falcons continued to struggle, falling to 2-6 and 1-4. Falcons' quarterback Michael Fritz actually threw for 203 yards, but two interceptions, a fumble and a blocked punt prevented Lake from establishing consistency. Ball, on the other hand, took full advantage of the opportunities with quarterback Rashawn Pope rushing for 121 yards and touchdowns of 6 and 9 yards, while Kenneth Caldwell burst for 111 yards and scoring jaunts of 1 and 62 yards. It was a different scenario from a year ago when Lake's defense put up a roadblock in a 10-6 victory. "Last year we had a lot of experience on defense," Lake head coach Troy Aduddell said. "It helped us. We are so young now. Their (Ball) speed has always been a problem for us, but when we had the experience we were able to handle it better. We made a lot of mistakes and that ended up hurting us." The damage was done in the first half as Ball sprinted to a 24-0 advantage, thanks largely to Ball's explosions and the Falcons' mistakes. In the second half, Lake started off on a positive note, putting together a 14-play, 73-yard march on the running of Devin Williams, the passing of Fritz and a few Ball penalties. Fritz capped the drive with a 4-yard touchdown toss to Warren Cormier on fourth-and-goal. The two-point conversion failed. Although Lake put together an impressive seven-minute drive, Ball burst the Falcons' bubble 20 seconds later when Caldwell scored on his 62-yard run. Ball added the knockout punch in the fourth period on Pope's 9-yard TD gallop. Lake ended the game with Williams scoring on a 7-yard run. The Tors had the upper hand most of the night, but the Falcons' feisty play left an impression on Ball coach Paul Lanier. "They are so well-coached," Lanier said. "They're really young this year, but they played hard. They never gave up. They kept hitting and coming at us. They are really going to be good in the future with those young kids." Making the playoffs is out of the question, but Aduddell is hoping the Falcons can finish the season on a positive note during the final two weeks. "The younger kids are getting experience," Aduddell said. "We have to keep improving." The Falcons will be the host team on Friday against Clear Creek (6-1, 4-1), which suffered its first loss of the season last week against unbeaten Pearland, 24-10. Game time is 7 p.m. in District Stadium. Galveston will host Brazoswood (4-4, 1-4) on Friday. The Bucs were defeated by Alvin last week, 28-14. ©Clear Lake Citizen 2001
