by Raymond Aronoff

Although the Alvin yellow jackets showed up at Clear Lake with cow bells and enthusiasm, the freshman falcons showed Alvin why they are being considered for a future force in the district.  Alvin did have glimpses of being able to run the ball, but when required the Falcon defense put the brakes on.

On the first punt return of the game, Elrick Jones tore all the way up the opponent sideline on his way to the first special teams score of the year.   The extra point was missed and the falcons led the game six to zero.  On the next drive by the yellow jackets, Matt Young playing left corner, picked off the yellow jackets QB and the falcons offense was ready to take the field for the first time.

The first drive of the falcon offense was dominated by Devin Williams and the offensive line.  Devin ran the ball well and was even called upon for a 3rd and 12 on the Yellow Jackets 35.   He gained 17 yards on the play.  With the ball on the 2 yard line, Devin took a pitch right and beat the defense to the right front corner of the end zone.  Going for 2 points to make up for the missed extra point early in the game, Devin faked the run right and found Dan Green in the back of the end zone for the conversion.  Falcons 14 Yellow Jackets 0.

As Alvin continued to struggle moving the ball, the Clear Lake offense started to open up for the first time this season.  After a couple of solid runs by Williams, T.J. Jordan found Scott Oswald on a go route right in front of the home crowd.  The ball dropped right into Scott’s hands, in stride, for a 65 yard TD strike.  With the extra point attempt good by Oswald the Falcons went up 21-0.

With the Falcons offense and defense running like a well oiled machine, the Yellow Jackets quieted on the sideline as well as the stands.  Continued hard hitting on the defense by Matt Young, Jamie McMurchy, Elrick Jones and Ryan Johnson, the yellow jackets got nothing generated en the second half.

Meanwhile, the falcon offense showed true balance in their attack.  Jamie McMurchy ran what appeared to be a 65 yard touchdown run.   This was called back by a Clear Lake penalty but that surely did not slow down the offense.  T.J. Jordan rolled out and found Dan Green on the numbers running an out pattern and Dan got the ball to the Yellow Jackets 3 yard line.  After a failed attempt to run up the gut, T.J. Jordan rolled out again and rifled the ball into Dan again for the final score of the game.

The Falcons attack showed good balance in the second half and the Clear Lake homecoming crowd was both audible and visible.   Falcon freshman such as Jordan Pennington and David Pearce got the fans loud and proud during the game.  It was a great first homecoming game for these Freshman as they add another mark in the “W” column to go 4 and 0 on the year.
