Writers Choice Award

Well it's not the all Madden team, but we thought it would be great to recognize some of the outstanding style and play we saw over the 10 week season.   The Freshman Falcons showed a great deal of promise going 9-1 for the season.  I am sure the Varsity coaches are excited to have A strong group of young men coming their way.  Well, enough about the future, back to the awards.

Nice Guy Award:  This award speaks for itself.  With coaches and teammates screaming and trying to dig out the extra effort with anything they got, the Nice Guy Award goes to that player that could find the effort and keep the smile.  This award goes to Scott Nimmens and Matt Young.

Salsa Spin Award:  Although there were many Freshman that thought they could do the spin, there was one that took the spin to a new level.  Much like Lynn Swann of the Superbowl champion Pittsburgh Steelers education in ballet; it was rumored that several of the players took up Salsa in their Spanish classes last year in preparation for this years season.  One player must have really felt the rhythm as he not only spun his way out of trouble on a number of occasions, but also learned how to lean in and use the momentum of the hit to keep on running.   This years spinner is none other than Salso-matic Sensational Adam Wolfe.

Boo-Yah Award:  This saying was started by the Great Wilbur Marshall while playing in College.  Wilbur liked to talk a little smack after his dominating hits, but that smack wasn't a big hit with the coaches.  The compromise (BOOYAH!!) is what we hear on football fields around the country from Thursday's to Monday's.  The Boo-Yah award goes to the player that could really lay on some scary hits and liked to let the other team hear his voice as well.  This award is given to Elrick Jones.  Did anyone else notice that Elrick runs like Walter Payton?

Hot Pursuit Award:  The "Hot Pursuit" award is given to the player that continued to go until the whistle stopped play.   This player did not slow down because the play was not on his side of the field.  This player continued to track running backs and quarterbacks like a bloodhound until the whistle blew.  Even when the play passed him, he turned and burned.  This kind of effort is what makes a defense scary.  This award goes to Ryan Johnson for never giving up on any play.

Tough Guy Award:  There are always a couple of players that are just tough. These guys actually enjoy the bruises and the cuts.  These guys are the ones you want on "your" side.  On offense, the award goes to Jamie McMurchy Josh Hayes and Ben Volk.  Jamie ran over people and took some licks and kept on going.   Ben and Josh got better as the defense got tougher.  You can't teach that kind of toughness.  On Defense, the award goes to the entire defensive line, who showed promise of being one scary crew.  Keep eating boys and keep working out, in a couple of years, Running backs around the district will fear you.

Dirty Jersey Award:  This award goes to one player that was able to go five games without washing his Jersey.  Rumor had it that the bus windows were rolled down all the way home from a game because of this stinky collection of cotton and polyester.  Let's just hope he was washing his Jock Strap. This award goes to none other than Gabe Guzman.  It was also rumored that Gabe Guzman ate 7 big Mac's on their way home from Galveston.  Wow!

12th Man Award:  The 12th man, will actually go to a group of kids.  These kids called themselves the crew and they lived up to it.  Banners were made and voices were lost.  Not to mention that they were only threatened to be beat up at one away game.  These guys brought the spirit and deserve their recognition.  The crew chiefs were; David Pierce, Jordan Pennington and Brent Davis.  Emily Johnson also gets recognized for her vocal talents from the Parental section.

Biggest Transition Award:  The transition award goes to the player that ends up not only playing an unfamiliar position, but plays it well.  After losing their tailback to Varsity, Ryan Nisbett assumed a role at tailback and ran with it.  Ryan was a key element in backfield for the end of the season. Some people are labeled by their positions and some people are just football players.

Least Expected Blocker Award: This award was a surprise this year.  After reviewing a plethora of game tapes, a player kept streaking in front of the running backs on the pitch outs and making some amazing lead blocks. Although there was a good run at the trophy from Dan Green, this is the "unsuspected" lead blocker.  This award goes to quarterback T.J. Jordan. Perhaps T.J. is trying to rid the label of Q.B.'s being soft.  Regardless of his reasons, T.J. laid some teeth gritting blocks on some big boys this season.   He can pass, he can run and well I guess he can block too!!!?

Great season Freshman Falcons and see you all again next season!
